 Press Releases

  • Carlsbad, CA, March 18, 2026—Spinal Elements®, a spine technology company known for developing innovative surgical solutions that prioritize clinical performance and surgical efficiency, today announced 510(k) clearance from the FDA and the first cases using its Ventana A Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) System. Ventana A strengthens Spinal Elements’ family of 3D printed titanium interbodies for lumbar and cervical fusion and is being introduced through a limited market launch.

Ventana A is designed to facilitate the race to fusion and deliver improved outcomes for surgeons and patients. The unique hinged architecture of the Ventana family of implants is designed to maximize bone graft volume and containment throughout implantation. Through a specialized 3D printing process, Ventana A is engineered to enable surgeons to realize the full potential of the ALIF procedure, by restoring segmental alignment and stability, minimized titanium density, providing optimal load sharing to mitigate potential subsidence risk and improved visualization.

“ALIF is a powerful procedure and a workhorse for many spine surgeons, which is why we set out to develop a best-in-class system that maximizes its clinical benefits,” said Ron Lloyd, Chief Executive Officer. “Building on the proven Ventana platform, this contemporary system increases Spinal Elements’ portfolio offering and procedural reach to a greater number of surgeon and distribution partners. Combined with intuitive instrumentation and efficient packaging, Ventana A is designed to enhance clinical performance and operating room efficiency, demonstrating our commitment to continued innovation – working with surgeon partners to develop systems that are meaningfully differentiated and deliver improved outcomes”.

The first case was performed by Dr. A.J. Rush III at Texas Spine Consultants in Addison, TX. Dr. Rush shared: “The Ventana A system delivers a clinical advantage to everyday challenges for spine surgeons. The large graft window allows for maximal graft delivery as well as improved visualization for fusion assessment and distributes load across the entire surface to reduce subsidence risk. Having used the instrumentation in both lab and clinical settings, I can attest to Ventana A’s ability to offer a best in class ALIF solution.”

Dr. Rory Mayer a neurosurgeon practicing at Texas Spine & Scoliosis in Austin, TX said: “Ventana A is truly a bone graft delivery vessel. It has everything needed to maximize fusion potential for my patients: porous 3D printed titanium interbody, a large opening to facilitate bone graft placement, and a hinged lid to contain the bone graft and prevent graft from migrating from the interbody device during insertion into the disc space.”

Dr. Keven Burns of Spine Institute of Arizona, recently presented on the novel Ventana A implant and how the system allows him to maximize the potential of the ALIF procedure, to the spine surgeon community at the Spine Summit Conference in Scottsdale, AZ.

  • Carlsbad, CA, August 4, 2025—Spinal Elements, Inc. (“Spinal Elements” or the “Company”), a spinal implant company, today announced that it received a Vizient Innovative Technology contract for its Karma posterior fixation system.  The contract was awarded based on the recommendation of the Karma Fixation System by hospital experts who serve on one of Vizient’s client-led councils, and it signifies to Vizient provider clients unique qualities that potentially bring improvement to the healthcare industry.

Innovative Technology contracts are recommended after review and interaction with products submitted through Vizient’s Innovative Technology Program. Vizient client-led councils identify technologies that have the potential to enhance clinical care, patient safety, healthcare worker safety or improve business operations of healthcare organizations.

Developed by the Spinal Elements team with feedback and direction from spine surgeons, Karma is a procedural solution used to treat degenerative disc disease, a common condition of the lumbar spine. Karma uses a PEEK (polyetheretherketone, a medical-grade plastic) band in the densest (cortical) bone of the spine to provide fixation and stabilization to patients experiencing low back pain, leg pain, and/or instability. Karma is ideal for patients given its band is metal-free, low-profile, and minimizes tissue disruption. It is also ideal for ambulatory surgery centers given its low operating room footprint and universally sized implant.

Ron Lloyd, President and CEO of Spinal Elements, commented: “We are honored to receive an esteemed Vizient Innovative Technology contract for Karma. Based on clinical performance data for 12 and 24 months, Karma offers a meaningful alternative to conventional treatment options. By leveraging the strongest bone in the spine, it may mitigate unintended consequences while achieving similar surgical outcomes. Additionally, we are witnessing a trend of surgeries shifting to the ambulatory surgery centers, something both the patients and surgeons prefer. Karma is not only a game-changer for spine surgeons performing posterior fixation surgery on patients, but it is also answering the evolving demands of patients, surgeons, and healthcare systems.”

“After a review of the Karma Fixation System, Vizient’s client-led council agreed this technology offers a unique benefit over other products available in the market today and recommended it for an Innovative Technology contract. We are pleased to award this new contract to Spinal Elements,” said Kelly Flaharty, senior director of contract services for Vizient.

Vizient represents a diverse client base that includes academic medical centers, pediatric facilities, community hospitals, integrated health delivery networks and non-acute healthcare providers and has a portfolio that represents more than $140 billion in annual purchasing volume. Through its Innovative Technology Program, Vizient works with client-led councils and task forces to evaluate products for their potential to bring real innovation to healthcare. Vizient may award a contract to products deemed worthy of the Innovative Technology designation outside of the competitive bid cycle.

  • Carlsbad, CA – November 25, 2025 — Spinal Elements®, a spine technology company known for developing innovative surgical solutions that prioritize clinical performance and surgical efficiency, today announced the expansion of its Sapphire X® Cervical Plate System. The System now includes newly designed segmental and long plate options, offering surgeons enhanced versatility for anterior cervical spine procedures.

The Sapphire X system was originally launched as an anterior cervical system with segmental plates that provide streamlined instrumentation, a slim anatomical profile, short stature, and one-step insertion. The addition of the new segmental and long plate options allows for expanded applications across a broader spectrum of cervical pathologies, from single-level fusions to complex, multi-level reconstructions.

“These new plate options are a direct result of feedback from spine surgeons who asked for more intraoperative flexibility and efficiency,” said Rick Simmons, Chief Marketing Officer, Spinal Elements. “With the expanded Sapphire X platform, we continue to deliver solutions that are intelligently designed to support excellent clinical outcomes.”

The segmental plate is ideal for adjacent-level pathology or revision procedures where a shorter construct is needed to supplement existing hardware. The long plate offers additional stability and anchoring for multi-level cervical fusion cases, providing extended fixation in patients requiring robust anterior support.

Key benefits of the Sapphire X system include:

    • Low-profile, anatomical design to minimize soft tissue irritation
    • Integrated, one-step insertion for efficiency and alignment
    • Comprehensive plate and screw size matrix for customized construct options
    • Streamlined surgical workflow through intuitive instrumentation

With the launch of the new configurations, Spinal Elements reinforces its commitment to providing comprehensive anterior cervical solutions that combine surgeon input, biomechanical integrity, and surgical efficiency.
