Biomaterials & Surfaces for Medical & Dental Implants

Since 1991, Himed has been at the forefront of biomaterial coating characterization. Beginning with early innovations in hydroxyapatite coatings and apatitic abrasives, Himed made formative in-roads to healing technologies that have greatly enhanced outcomes for patients globally. Over subsequent years Himed has grown its reputation for quality, consistency, and collaboration; serving as a vital partner to our clients in the medical, dental, laboratory, and research industries as they seek to innovate new solutions for a rapidly changing world. From our all-in-one research and production facility located in New York, Himed continues to supply raw biomaterials for a wide variety of purposes as well as highly customizable biocompatible coating and texturing solutions with our MATRIX™ line of surface treatments. At Himed we keep the end patient top-of-mind; knowing that while our products are small, their impact can be enormous. We're committed to producing solutions that help the body heal.

 Featured Products

  • MATRIX HA™ Hydroxyapatite Coatings
Himed’s MATRIX HA™ uses raw hydroxyapatite (HA, or HAp) powder of exceptionally high purity to coat titanium implants and medical devices....

  • Our proprietary MATRIX HA™ process utilizes hydroxyapatite that we manufacture on-site to purity levels that exceed ASTM F1185 requirements for surgical implants. The process begins with a virtually residue-free apatitic abrasive to texturize titanium implants. The implant then receives a highly precise application of HA using our robotic atmospheric plasma spray system. The combination of contaminant-free surfaces, exceedingly pure HA, and optimal coating thicknesses results in implants that support improved osseointegration and better patient outcome.

  • MCD Apatitic Abrasive
An apatitic abrasive used to enhance the surface morphology of orthopedic and dental implants. It is also employed as a post-processing step for 3D printed titanium implants....

  • One of Himed’s first innovations for the implant industry came with our development of a biocompatible abrasive for texturizing titanium implants. Unlike conventional grit-blasting media such as alumina or silicon carbide, MCD Apatitic Abrasive leaves behind no compromising metallic residue. We manufacture our own resorbable blast media (RBM) in the form of a granular, multi-phase calcium phosphate that’s uniquely hard. Exceedingly effective for texturing titanium implants, our abrasive allows for superior biological fixation.

  • Calcium Phosphate Powders
Most Himed biomaterials are available as powders, and we’ve developed innovative methods for producing customized powders with irregular shapes and variable porosity....

  • Manufactured to exacting client specifications, Himed’s calcium phosphate powders can be customized for flowability, surface morphology, and chemical composition. Because we manufacture our biomaterials in-house, we can guarantee the highest grade product with uncompromising quality control. Available in small or large lots, our CaP powders are used across the globe in biocompatible implant coatings, bone grafts, cements, and bioactive scaffold material. We also offer an exceptionally hard multi-phase calcium phosphate for use as an apatitic abrasive.

  • MATRIX Ti™ Textured Titanium Coatings
Himed’s MATRIX Ti™ is a patented process that produces titanium-rich porous coatings with a highly textured surface ideally suited to encourage osseointegration....

  • Traditional methods for applying titanium coatings to medical, dental, and spinal implants require vacuum chambers. Himed’s MATRIX Ti™ is a patented process that uses an air plasma spray system under atmospheric conditions. Applied by robotic, six-axis motion, the process creates a titanium-rich, highly textured and porous coating that’s highly biocompatible. With a precisely controlled spray pattern and custom masking, porosity, and thickness options, we are able to produce consistent and repeatable results for our clients.

  • Cast Calcium Phosphate Forms
Our cast forms can be used for evaluation of oral care products, and to simulate teeth or bone in experiments in industrial or educational laboratories....

  • The cast calcium phosphate forms Himed offers to clients are as diverse as the clients themselves. With the ability to cast CaP into virtually any shape, our clients rely on us for implant screws, hydroxyapatite discs, and machineable HA blocks. Our cast shapes are not only entirely customizable, they’re remarkably strong, making them suitable for a variety of applications. We offer forms created from HA, beta-TCP, and BCP mixtures with variable densities and compositions and can gel-cast CaP forms to produce exactly the form required.
