First robotic platform for surgical assistance

 Press Releases

  • The pioneering robotics developer’s latest innovations in robot-assisted surgery

Duncan, South Carolina, August 27, 2021 — This year’s NASS (North American Spine Society) Annual Meeting, taking place Sept. 29 - Oct. 2 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, offers the opportunity to discover groundbreaking advancements in spine care. Stäubli Robotics will represent the technological frontier at Booth 1839, with robotic solutions for making surgical interventions safer and more successful than ever.

Stäubli has a history of developing robots for the life science sector. The world’s first documented robot-assisted surgical procedure, a neurosurgical biopsy, was performed successfully in 1985 using Stäubli’s PUMA 560 Unimation robot. In the 35 years since, the company has continued to refine its technology. Today Stäubli robots are used in more than 10,000 surgical procedures a year and play a role in the development of innovative surgical techniques through partnerships with leading medical device makers.

At NASS 2021, Stäubli will feature its TX2-60L Cleanroom (CR), an ISO 14644-1 Class 2 robot with hand-guided functionality for use in highly delicate procedures such as spinal interventions. Robotics experts will present an interesting use case for a six-axis anthropomorphic robot arm in spinal surgery, demonstrating how the robot assists using a simulated navigation system to ensure accurate placement of surgical tools based on a defined surgical plan. Along with its high precision and reliability, the robot meets all criteria for use under sterile surgical conditions, including a design that facilitates decontamination between interventions.

Seeing the potential to transform the operating theater, Stäubli’s medical robotics experts collaborate daily with medical device makers around the world to develop state-of-the-art robotic solutions for dramatically enhancing device effectiveness. The current line, exemplified by the TX2-60L CR, offers numerous advantages, including:

    • Higher accuracy during procedures
    • Improved safety through reduction in human error
    • Limited risk of contamination due to hygienic design
    • Less trauma to the patient and shorter recovery times
    • Optimized scheduling, improving hospital productivity and efficiency

Stäubli has the broadest range of robots on the market designed specifically for life science applications. They are a key component in medical devices used in spinal surgeries and other procedures ranging from hip replacements and hair transplants to liver cancer operations, brain interventions and more.
