Oerlikon Balzers BALIMED PVD coatings have properties that can provide advantages in many applications. The dark grey or black coatings such as BALIMED C or BALIMED DLC have excellent wear resistant properties and will significantly extend the life of an instruments’ cutting edge. The “black” coatings have also been used to reduce the glare from the harsh operating room lighting.
BALIMED A is extremely popular as it imparts a rich golden color and has proven biocompatibility.
When “like” materials come in contact with each other in metal to metal sliding conditions, especially the softer biomaterials such as stainless steels and titanium, they have a strong tendency to gall. BALIMED PVD coatings have an extremely low coefficient of friction and can act as a “dry film lubricant”, reducing friction and eliminating the need for lubrication. Coatings may cover only part of the instrument geometry or cutting edge, denoting specific depth measurements, and thus being used as a readily visible indicator for the surgeon. Groups of instruments may be coated to differentiate them from similar sets with slight variations in size or geometry. The coatings provide an inert chemical barrier which enhances corrosion resistance and withstands repeated autoclaving.
